On vacations (or not wanting to come home…)

We are back to reality.
Durn it.
It was a great week!
We drove down to Cape San Blas, FL on Saturday and got there in the dark.
The next morning we got up to this…

View from our bedroom
Walkway over the dunes to the beach
We saw a lot of this
And this
Ate some great gulf shrimp
Creole Shrimp over grits at “The Hut” in Eastpoint

Went fishing- didn’t catch anything but saw lots of dolphins!
There was virtually no cell phone service which was great because hubby couldn’t work (well, he snuck in some computer time but it was not much so I won’t complain.)
On the way home we stopped at the U.S.S. Alabama in Mobile to let the kids run a bit.  They had a great time looking at the ship and lots of cool airplanes.   Ate lunch at Felix’s Fish Camp, and it was great.
Now to lose the five pounds I gained…

Happy Birthday, Daddy

My dad would have been 65 today.

He really was an amazing guy.
He was brilliant and could make everyone laugh.
But, he passed away from a rare form of cancer when he was only 32.
He never got to see this:

My wedding
or this,
My brother’s wedding
or these,
Six Grandkids
But I’ve always felt like he was there, watching over us.
Just like he said he would
when I was six.
So,
Happy Birthday, daddy.
I love you.

Kids Meals

Okay,
When did it happen that kids got entirely different meals than adults?
As a child I never had that choice.  Eating out I can’t really remember restaurants having kid’s menus (except for McD’s of course.)  Now, if you search for “Kids Meals” online you get so many sites on how to feed your kids, what kids want to eat…
My brother and I ate everything and actually liked it.  (OK, I wouldn’t eat boiled shrimp, liver,  or blueberry pancakes, and still don’t like them.)
Now it seems that people EXPECT kids to eat differently and bow down to it.
I don’t like that.
How is a child supposed to appreciate good food if they don’t ever taste it?
I know many people who cook entirely different things for their children than they eat.  I refuse to do this.  My rule is “You have to try two bites.  If you hate it I’ll maybe make you something else that resembles what we are eating.”
I love places with no kid’s menu.  My kids look at me with big eyes- “But what do we eat then?”
Well, you get to CHOOSE!   (And not from Pizza, Hot Dog, Chicken Nuggets, or Hamburger!)
They always love it once they get over the shock.
Check out these adorable school lunchbox ideas I found on Flickr.

No more Tiaras?

We had a busy weekend (again.)  I am so looking forward to Spring Break on the beach, just being able to stretch out and breathe deeply.

The Girl Scout pinewood derby was Saturday.  My troop had one trophy this year, one of the girls got 2nd place for speed!  (Not as many as last year but it was still lots of fun!)  Emily had to rush from dance to the derby, and then off to the Father-Daughter dance and movie with dad.  (My iPhone is acting up again and won’t upload my pics, if I can get them off I’ll post!)

Yesterday I attempted to clean her room while she was at sewing club.  ARGH.  After many bags of garbage and a trunk full of things to give away you can see the floor!  (Yes, it was that bad.)  I’m going to work on it again today and maybe I’ll be able to paint it before Spring Break.  She wants a crazy lime green color that I’m not too game on, but hey, I grew up in houses where we couldn’t paint the walls.

It’s so hard to believe she’s a teenager now.  I asked her if we could get rid of her dress-up clothes and she said “yes.”  🙁  We took them to the neighbor’s sweet little girl, so it made us both feel better knowing they would be used.  But still, no more tutus in my house… (except real ones, of course.)
