On Reading to Babies (or It’s Never too Early)

I adore reading.
My kids also love a good book, maybe because we started reading to them from day one
(and even before!)  They all read very early, and honestly the only thing I did the same was to read to them constantly.

You can make reading to your baby an on-going game by:
  • Having siblings read to each other
  • Reading cookbooks or food labels aloud while cooking
  • Pointing to pictures and words in magazines or while opening mail
  • Giving them soft or board books to play with during tummy time
  • Reading signs aloud when driving
  • Reading your own books/magazine/newspaper aloud when nursing or feeding baby
  • Attending story-times at your local library or bookstore
Aimee loved this book at our library visit.
I read “One.  One blue ball.  One baby.  Baby girl, like you! ”
She really liked this page, so we read it a few times and she was done with the book.   At four months her attention span isn’t very long but every moment counts!
Remember that hearing your voice is what makes the learning experience.  You don’t have to read the exact words on the page, or finish the whole book to make it a valuable lesson!
This beautiful, green-build library not only has great books but a theater, classrooms, teaching kitchen,  greenhouse, craft rooms, computer lab, and walking trails!
I’m proud to be an Arkansas Better Beginnings Ambassador!  They have great resources for parents, families, and care givers on their website here.
This Saturday (August 23, 2014) they are offering a breastfeeding seminar at the Mosaic Templars Museum in Little Rock.  Register for the event on their website above.

On the Playroom-Before & Almost After

The last, major (indoor) project was the playroom…
I don’t know if you remember what it looked like,
but when we bought the house it had a paper like wallboard
in an unfinished attic space.
We framed and drywalled,
put down a cork floor,
painted,
 and got this:

Then the cabinet maker (HomeWorks of AR-Dwight Johnson)
worked his magic…

and…

You have to forgive my camera, it’s on it’s last legs!
I’m working on arranging things and touching up paint now.
The color on the walls is Urban Putty (Sherwin Williams) My go-to neutral.
I plan on making a gallery with magnetic chalkboard paint
down the hall and will post pictures when I’m done!
I don’t really like the way it looks in hall
area so probably going to change that color when I do the magnetic paint.
What color to do…

On Keeping on the Sunny Side

My sweet friend, Jerusalem, launched her new book this weekend
with a Homemade Hootenanny!
(for those of you who don’t know a “Hootenanny” is an old time throw-down, or PARTY!)
Of course, most (ok, pretty much all) of the pictures I took were of
food or people stuffing their faces.  I didn’t have even one of an adult
not eating!

Jerusalem really is a Jolly Goode Gal.
She’s one of the sweetest,
most down-to-earth people I know
AND she also happens to have
a fantastic blog and now book-
Monkhouse, Jerusalem’s hubby’s band,
was in full swing with great folk and gospel tunes.
I really adore their music!
Such a fun night!

Make sure you stop by Jolly Goode Gal today and get your copy of A Homemade Year!
If you buy today Jerusalem is autographing them for you! 🙂
(They’d make lovely Mother’s day gifts!)

On Library Fun

I’ve always been a library junkie.

Our library is awesome and has
a fantastic celebration every year called “Lamanpalooza”
(live bands, games, contests, jumpies, and of course food!)

This year was so hot the turnout wasn’t as huge
as in the past but it made for a nice time.

On My Book Fix

I am trying to purge.
Not sure if it’s because of…
a.) my daughter’s obsession with American Pickers
b.) trying to decide if we’re going to put our house on the market
c.) my hubby watching Hoarders online.

Anyway, it’s a good thing.

I managed to get through the books in our dining room.

The best thing was the SEVEN boxes of movies and books I have to give away!
