On 95 Cupcakes

This weekend we celebrated my grandpa’s 95th birthday!
My Popie is an amazing guy.  Smart, funny, and kind.
It was great to get some of the family together- we don’t do it enough it seems.

We had a red, white, and blue themed BBQ lunch.  Mom used baskets and apple crates from her house for decoration and storage.  We bought yellow mums, red peppers, and black-eyed susans in pots to use as flowers so we wouldn’t waste anything.  Mom had a ton of red white and blue fabric she’d bought to make a quilt and we used that on serving tables and just brown craft paper from the hardware store on the tables.  Turned out really cute!  We made banners out of twine and strips of torn fabric which were adorable.

I’d made ten dozen cupcakes!  Vanilla Bean, Lemon-Lime, Chocolate Caramel, S’mores, and Coconut!  Look for more pictures and recipes soon on the cooking blog.

Of course my camera decided to protests AND my phone’s memory was full so I couldn’t take any pictures.  The ones above my ten year old took with his camera!

On Repeating

I am busy (and lazy) so I decided to do a repeat of an old post today!

When you give a mom a mirror…
Which is not very often- probably not enough,

Add caption
She’ll see frown lines
and freckles that must be cancerous,
and remember that she needs to put on sunscreen,
She remembers that she never put on much sunscreen in her days on the beach
surfing and swimming so
she will think she needs to go put sunscreen on her kids,
Putting sunscreen on her kids she will see their little faces and think
that maybe they do look like the eyes
that were staring out at her from the mirror,
That will make her think
that maybe she is the same girl after all.
She’ll see time passing and like it.

On Flash Dancing

Have you ever seen a flash mob?
I really hadn’t until Emily was in this one this weekend!
So much fun!

The first dancers are all professionals with Ballet Arkansas.   (Make sure you check out their site- some great shows lined up for this season!)  My kids will all three be in the BA Nutcracker again- boys as soldiers and Emily in the flower chorus and Arabian scene.  She’s excited because those are two of her “dream parts.”

Dancing somehow reminds me of the hummingbirds that have been sucking my feeders dry twice a day lately.   (I know, very random.)  One hummingbird buzzed me at the front door yesterday and told me that no one had fed him.  Quite funny.  Then, another hovered at the back patio door at eye level and puffed up his feathers in disgust.  Telling first the dog, then me that the feeders were empty – bossy little bird.

On the Smallness of the World and Memories

Yesterday I went to help my mom with an estate sale for awhile.  The random job I was given was to sort through a box of CD’s that someone had deemed “unworthy” of selling.  Looking through them I found it was a cool eclectic collection. The lady’s grandson is a musician and had some live recordings of bands he’d opened for as well as other CD’s I’d had or have.  The Pixies, Love & Rockets,  Lenny Kravitz, Ray Charles, Brazilian tunes…
Memories of high school cruising, kisses in college…

And then-
I see a face I hadn’t seen in years staring back at me from a CD cover.
My friend, Peggy…
holding a plate of porkchops…
“Chuletas” the caption says.
A gift of music she’d made for someone?

Peggy passed away several years ago after a long and hard fight with cancer.    Memories of her came flooding back like an unexpected gift.
-Meeting her for the first time at the library, both of us pregnant and large, hearing her speak Spanish to her daughter… I answered her and there was an instant connection of kids and women that didn’t fit the Southern Belle mold
-Her seeing my music lists and saying “Oh, we are alike.”  She was funny like that.
-Playing at the Rivermarket with the kids, talking about the strange thing that was Little Rock at the time
-Talking about troubles in my garage
-Her funeral- the church packed with so many people that not everyone could sit down…

I bought the CD.
Haven’t listened to it yet…

On a Bloggy Good Time

This past weekend I attended the Arkansas Women Bloggers Unplugged conference in Mountain View at the Ozark Folk Center State Park.

If you know me (or read my blog) you know how much my family loves Mountain View and the folk center.   It isn’t unheard of for us to get an urge and drive the 2 1/2 hrs for some Tommy’s cheese pizza and music in the square.

If we were closer I would beg to work at the folk center.  (As a kid I liked to dream that I was transported back to the pioneer days.)   We did get a few breaks where we got to roam the center to shop and explore.  So I pretended I was the only female blacksmith in the village- but then remembered how easily I get hot and just bought some windchimes.  Maybe an herbalist or glass blower instead?

Bloggy Buds (Kyran, Alison, Whitney) Shoppin’

I hadn’t been on a girls’ only trip in over ten years- and this was an amazing experience.  I got to room with some fun and feisty ladies (Alison, Sarabeth, and Whitney) and hang out with others (esp. Melissa, Jerusalem, Brittany, Kyran, and Natalie!) We got to be nutty and smart- my favorite!  I learned how to “tweet” properly, Instagram, and how to get Klout in some strange things.   If you live in Arkansas please check out Arkansas Women Blogger’s– a great community of fantastic ladies willing to help you with anything.

On Friday had an Iron chef AWBU contest and got awesome aprons with our blog names embroidered on them!

Goat cheese spread, fruit salsa, and white bean dip
Team Savory’s Contribution!

And swag?  Wow.  The AWBU team outdid themselves.  The sponsors went all out and I came home with bags and bags of goodies (Ziploc Versa-glass containers, All You magazines, Mrs. Meyers goodies, boot polish, Happy Birthday baby books, Field notes, Duck Tape that my daughter confiscated, handmade lotion from Tommy Sue’s Critters AND an amazing pair of Ariat boots from Country Outfitter!)

(Be reading for a chance to win a gift certificate for your own pair of boots from Country Outfitter in the next month!)

At our BBQ on Saturday night we even were witnesses to one of the sweetest things…
A fellow blogger, Gina was asked to tell her tale of how she started blogging.  Unbeknownst to her, her boyfriend Thom walked up behind her during her talk and proposed!  Such a sweet love story- read more about it on her blog

Gina & Thom’s Engagement!

A big “Thank You!” to the AWBU team, the great sponsors,  and all the folks at the Ozark Folk Center State Park for all of your hard work!
