Whew!

I’m done with the cakes and they are gone to their new homes! YAY!
The big bridal shower cake wasn’t as pretty as I’d liked it to be, but it is so hard to make a 1/2 sheet look beautiful. Not my favorite shape. I have a bad picture of it, and will try to get another.
There was basketweave along the sides but it doesn’t show here. I went with a cream cheese icing, but cut the cream cheese a bit and added more butter.

The birthday cake for Kennedy was really cute, I don’t have a picture of it put together, and will try to get one of those also. I’d made a banner out of fondant with her name to sit around the bottom layer, and some squiggly things to hang between layers, so they won’t be in these pics.

Top Layer
Bottom Layer

Both of these were buttercream with fondant decorations, and I’d never done that before- but they did work alright. I put them in the fridge and no issues (that have been reported yet!)

Today is mom’s open house too- hope it sells today! 🙂
*Note- Scott raced in a bike ride for diabetes this weekend (50 miles) and made it! He even took the kids to the movies afterwards! I am really impressed!

Sweet Ideas

I’m trying to get the cakes I have to make for Sunday straight in my head…
I have a pink cake for my friend’s 5 yr. old girl and a bridal shower cake for my mom-in-law’s buddies to make.
She wants something like the bear one in yesterday’s post, (minus the bear) so I thought this was cute. Probably with brighter colored dots (hot pink, turquoise, bright green or purple?)
Might do a bow along the bottom with her name instead of on the cake. Don’t know if I dare do that since I haven’t made one in awhile.
The bridal shower cake is the same colors, except they want a solid white sheet cake with some of daisies in those same colors (turquoise, green, hot pink) so I can use the same fondant. They don’t want theirs covered in fondant though, and not sure if I’ll do the little girl’s cake in fondant or just decorate with it. Most people like the taste of buttercream better.

Have to make a trip to the cake store to get some boxes and food coloring (as my kids can’t have it I don’t keep any in the house!)

Jobs?

It’s funny how things work. I know when I was fresh out of college with a BS in my hand- going on 100’s of interviews and being told “When are you getting pregnant?” (I was a 21 yr old newlywed with no plans for kids soon) and “What does your husband do?” or told “We have no need for Spanish speakers in Arkansas.” (Yes, that was from some major companies including Walmart.) So, I took what jobs I could get- grocery store clerk, JCPenney’s salesgirl, ManPower employee… until things came along.
Now, I don’t really want to work. I mean, I do work- but at home. I have three kids that keep me hopping. I volunteer with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, three schools… but lately it seems like the universe it trying to tell me something.
I translate on the side for friends- mainly for Spanish speaking friends who need help with a school form, government form etc. but also for English speakers wanting to translate a document or website. I’ve never charged since I quit being a “translator” 11 yrs ago. But this week I’ve had opportunities springing up and wondering if that’s a sign I should start trying it on the side. Scott keeps reminding me if I did it for money the pressure would be on and I’d feel obligated more than I do now. Probably true.
I also do a website for a school we used to go to, and that has generated several other people asking me if I’d do it professionally! (Never would have thought about that.)
I’ve also had more cakes pop into sight. I have two cakes to make for Sunday- a bridal shower cake and a little girl’s birthday cake (for friends.) I’ll post pics when I get them done.
And in June a wedding cake! I admit I was a little disappointed when we decided to wait on opening a bakery here in Park Hill, and then someone else opened it right where we were going to- but realize it’s not the best time for me. I love having time with my kids. They are only little for a “little” while and I don’t want to waste it.
I guess the point of my daily rambling is this-
Opportunities are there if I want them, and that IS a nice feeling!

Procrastinating- February 8, 2008

I’m trying to get going here! I have to make a cake for my mother in law’s birthday (Feb.11th) and not sure what to make…She loves my carrot cake and cream cheese icing, so I was going to do a basketweave cake with fresh flowers, but saw this pink one and thought it was adorable. Of course I should have done the bow yesterday if I wanted this one… I did one similar in white and gold for my grandad’s 90th birthday/Grandparents 65th anniversary in September. It turned out really cute and I had their initials on top and all their kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids initials on a star each. It was carrot with cream cheese insides and fondant on the outside (stars were gumpaste.) I am going to try and put together an album with some of my cakes, but not sure how soon! Scott and I keep talking about opening a restaurant. I want to have Jac potty trained first though! I’ll post photos after the cake is done. Jac has told me how dumb I’m being writing on here. I try to do this before he’s awake and it looks like time’s up. My goal is to have a good Worldfest booth tomorrow for Girl Scouts, make a cake, and try to make yoga next week! (I’ve been so bad and my body’s letting me know it!)
